Ilminster Canal (longer session, shorter blog)

Today, I introduced Dominic to the Ilminster Canal and took the opportunity in a longer session to fish the pole in a more methodical way than I have been able to in my shorter sessions. In essence, this was my first 'proper' go at the venue.
We always seem to pick the worst days to go fishing in, weather-wise, and today was no exception. After a chilly, but largely comfortable start, skies started to darken and, before we knew it, we were being pelted by hail. My fishing continued in much the same vein before, during and after the storm (which lasted all of ten minutes), as by now my two lines had become quite productive. I was fishing tiny 2mm expander pellets on the hook on my longer line and was catching roach of all sizes, and plenty of small skimmers too.
Breadpunch also picked up regular bites, and I was quite surprised when I lifted the net out at the end of the session to reveal around 12lb of fish. The absence of any goldfish in this lot will, I'm sure, please George Burton over at Float, Flight and Flannel.
Afterwards, it was on to Dillington Pond, also on the Ilminster AA ticket, where Dominic took a lovely 3lb chub almost immediately on a prawn, then picked up a couple of solid perch also. My lobworms were again snaffled by quality roach, but the perch were a fraction of the size I was hoping for. In what little time we had here, I did enjoy regular bites on tares on my secondary line. Though the two are often lumped together, I found that this bait produced far more deliberate bites than you would expect to get when fishing with hemp, in that you could watch the bite slowly develop. Definitely a bait to try again when I have more time to give it a 'proper' go...
